Testing The APP Sensor Assembly

Accelerator Pedal Position -APP- Sensor Basics (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 3.5L Chevy Malibu and Pontiac G6)

The APP sensors can be tested in one of two ways. Either a dynamic test can be done (where you test the sensor live) or a multimeter resistance test.

Both are very accurate ways of testing APP sensor 1 and APP sensor 2. You can find the APP sensor resistance test explained in detail in this tutorial: APP Sensor Tests (2005-2009 3.5L Chevy Malibu And Pontiac G6).

If you're testing the APP sensors dynamically, you can easily accomplish this without having to remove the accelerator pedal from the vehicle. And this is how it's done:

  • Connect the red multimeter test lead to the APP sensor signal wire.
  • Ground the black multimeter test lead.
  • Turn the key. This powers up the APP sensor assembly. The APP sensor assembly must remain connected to its electrical connector!
  • Depress the accelerator pedal.
  • Each APP sensor's voltage should increase as you push the pedal down and the voltage should decrease as you release the pedal.

If you're resistance testing the sensors, there's a good chance you'll have to remove the pedal to gain access to the APP sensor assembly's terminals.
