Testing the input speed sensor (known in Honda tech speak as the mainshaft speed sensor) can easily be done with a simple multimeter.
In this tutorial, I'll explain how to do it in a step-by-step manner and in plain English.

You can find this tutorial in Spanish here: Cómo Probar El Input Speed Sensor (1994-1997 2.2L Accord, Odyssey) (at: autotecnico-online.com).
APPLIES TO: This tutorial, on how to test the input speed sensor (mainshaft speed sensor), applies to the following vehicles:
- 2.2L Honda Accord (DX, EX, LX): 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997.
- 2.2L Honda Odyssey: 1995, 1996, 1997.
Location Of The Input Speed Sensor
The transmission input speed sensor (mainshaft speed sensor) is located on the side of the transmission that faces the front of the vehicle.
The orange arrow in the photos above point to the input speed sensor.
Testing The Resistance Of The Input Speed Sensor
Testing the input speed sensor involves testing the sensor's internal resistance with a multimeter in Ohms mode.
The factory resistance specification, of the input speed sensor, is: 400-600 Ohms.
Let's get started:
- 1
Disconnect the input speed sensor from its electrical connector.
- 2
Place your multimeter in Ohms mode.
- 3
Measure the resistance across the 2 male terminals of the connector as shown in the illustration above.
- 4
Your multimeter should register a resistance between 400-600 Ohms.
Let's take a look at what your test results mean:
CASE 1: The resistance was within specification. This is the correct and expectecd test result and it lets you know that the input speed sensor is OK.
CASE 2: The resistance WAS NOT within specification. This test result lets you know that the input speed sensor is bad and needs to be replaced.
Where To Buy The Input Speed Sensor
Honda uses two different types of transmission input speed sensors. One is made by Hadsys and the other is made by Tec.
You can tell them apart by the shape of the sensor, see the photo above.
The OE part number for the Hadsys input speed sensor is: Honda Part No. 28810-P0X-003.
The OE part number for the Tec input speed sensor is: Honda Part No. 28810-P0X-004.
