MAP Sensor Code Won't Go Away
Quite a few problems can have a direct impact on engine performance and affect the engine's vacuum. The PCM then lights up the check engine light and stores a MAP sensor trouble.
Unfortunately, this MAP sensor trouble code doesn't clearly indicate that it's not the MAP sensor that's bad but that it's simply reporting on an engine performance problem that could be caused by any number of things.
Since the MAP sensor's job is to measure the vacuum the engine produces and quite a lot of different problems can affect engine performance and affect engine vacuum, it's prone to confuse folks into replacing a good MAP sensor.
Again, this is due to the fact that quite a few things can cause the engine to produce low vacuum and set a MAP sensor diagnostic trouble code.
So if the MAP sensor tested good (or you've replaced it) and you're still getting a trouble code for it, then the following testing tips may help you nail down the problem and solution:
- Check fuel pump pressure. A failing fuel pump that's not feeding enough fuel to the engine will cause a lean air fuel mixture that can affect engine performance and engine vacuum.
- Check that the EGR valve isn't stuck open (if equipped).
- Check engine compression of all six cylinders.
- Check for vacuum leaks around the intake manifold.
