How To Test The Blower Motor Switch (1991-1996 3.9L Dodge Dakota)

TEST 4: Testing The HI Blower Speed Circuit

Testing The HI Blower Speed Circuit. How To Test The Blower Motor Switch (1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996 3.9L Dodge Dakota)

So far you have:

  • Tested the blower motor switch's LO speed circuit (TEST 1).
  • Tested the blower motor switch's M1 speed circuit (TEST 2).
  • Tested the blower motor switch's M2 speed circuit (TEST 3).

For our last test we're gonna' test the high (HI) speed circuit of the blower motor switch. The terminal that we're gonna' probe with our 12 Volt test light is female terminal #3 of the blower resistor assembly's connector.

Female terminal #3 should have a grey (GRY) wire connected to it.

These are the test steps:

  1. 1

Disconnect the blower resistor from its electrical connector.

NOTE: This and all the other tests are done with your 3.9L V6 Dodge Dakota's ignition key in its OFF position.

  2. 2

Select blower motor speed HI on the AC/Heater Control Panel.

  3. 3

Connect the 12 Volt test light's alligator clip to the positive (+) battery terminal of your Dodge Dakota's battery.

  4. 4

Probe the female terminal identified with the #3, of the blower resistor assembly's connector, with the metallic point of your 12 Volt test light.

Female terminal #3 has a grey (GRY) wire connecting to it.

  5. 5

The 12 Volt test light should come on if the HI circuit is OK.

Let's examine your test result:

CASE 1: The 12 Volt test light turned on. This is the correct test result and lets you know that the blower motor switch's HI circuit is working correctly.

You can conclude that the blower motor switch is not defective on your 3.9L V6 Dodge Dakota if:

  • Tested the blower motor switch's LO speed circuit (TEST 1) and the 12 Volt test light turned on.
  • Tested the blower motor switch's M1 speed circuit (TEST 2) and the 12 Volt test light turned on.
  • Tested the blower motor switch's M2 speed circuit (TEST 3) and the 12 Volt test light turned on.
  • Tested the blower motor switch's HI speed circuit (TEST 4) and the 12 Volt test light turned on.

CASE 2: The 12 Volt test light DID NOT turn on. This test result lets you know that the blower motor switch is defective and needs to be replaced.
